I have had a change of heart on the trial. We won't have the class time for a trial. The research on Attaturk is still part of the Winter Break work. So you will have that plus the Stearns, the DBQ essay, and the reading homework (w/ red lines and quiz) to keep you busy.

All the winter Work will be due on the first day back NO EXCUSES.

Honor Code Assignment

Unfortunately it has become necessary to discuss academic integrity among our AP World History community. I am making this a class assignment worth 15 points. Read the following honor code for AP World History and leave a comment. I will use the comments to fine tune the Honor Code but the gist of the document is that there are standards for the class and by enrolling in the class you are agreeing to those standards.

Advanced Placement World History Honor Code

I will not give or receive aid in examinations; I will not give or receive unpermitted aid in class work, in the preparation of reports, or in any other work that is to be used by the instructor as the basis of grading;
I will do my share and take an active part in seeing to it that others uphold the spirit and letter of the Honor Code.

Examples of conduct that have been regarded as being in violation of the Honor Code include (but are not limited to):

Copying from another or allowing another to copy from one’s own paper
Unpermitted collaboration
Plagiarism
Giving or receiving unpermitted aid on a take-home examination
Representing as one’s own work the work of another
Giving or receiving aid on an academic assignment under circumstances in which a reasonable person should have known that such aid was not permitted

Encomienda- the real story!

Great job on the trial.
Now we are off to the third unit, 1450-1750!



One of the interesting effects of the European colonian presence in LatinAmerica was the encomienda system. What was the encomienda system and how does it compare with other social systems in India, Africa, China, and Europe. The first intelligent response will recieve 5 points, every subsequant response that adds to the conversation will earn up to 5 points. HAve fun!

Byzantine Tabloid Factoids

I think you will find the Byzantine Empire intriguing with its backroom dealings and in-house squabbling. For each interesting bit of information I'll give one point. The only catch is that I get to select what I think constitutes interesting (and point worthy). I will also give a twenty point bonus to the most impressive submission. Happy hunting! We will run this one up to October 9.

The Trial Begins!!!

Each student will need to select a role for the upcoming trial. The points possible for each role are 50. I will offer up to 15 extra credit points for dressing in character. Sign in on this blog to select a role, first come first served. Following the each role is a brief description of the responsibilities.



The roles:
Judge
You will Oversee the proceedings and direct the behavior of the courtroom. (Mr. Parker will help.) You will rules on items of procedure and instruct the jury. You will make legal interpretations of legal concepts when needed.

Prosecuting Attorneys (3)
Your team will research the alleged crimes of the accused. Prosecute the case against Alexander. Obtain testimony from the witnesses and build a case to convict. (note- with so many charges and such limited time, it will be a good idea to prioritize the crimes of the accused.)

Defense Attorneys Same as prosecuting attorneys but your team will present a defense for the Accused. The Defense will cross-examine and call witnesses that will speak to Alexander's innocence.

Press
Although you won't have a great deal of research to do. You will prepare a report based on court room observation and post testimony interviews. You will publish your report on this blog.

Witnesses
Each of the witnesses selected will need to reseach that person and impersonate him or her. All questions should be answered as historically accurately as possible.

One person will serve as the jury. Just as with the Press, this person will not have researching responsibility but will be responsible for taking notes on the trial and rendering a written verdict.

You have until the class meeting before the trial to make a selection at which time I will assign one. All reserving of roles is to be done on the blog.

Alexander is Great!

The conquests of Alexander the Great spread Greek culture throughout the Middle East. We are going to have a trial in this class. Alexander will be put on trial for various crimes. I am offering (up to)5 points each for potential charges to be brought against Alexander. I am also offering one point each for names of potential witnesses in our trial. The maximum on this project is 25 points.
