Hm.. well the encomienda system was based of fuedalism in europe, the full right is by the crown in castiel. The system gave some spainards grants of indians, initially to teach them the catholic faith, but most spainards manipulated these indians, the system required the indians, or native americans to give payment for protection and teaching of faith. a interesting part is that they encomienda system didnt give the spainards law or rule over the indians, but this law was hard to enforce. The indians were used as a major labor force to bring supplies. The ecomiendos(what the spanish rulers were called) pretty much manipulated the indians under this system to get profit... Compared to the Other systems such as fuedalsim, this was worse since the indians were looked down upon and just used, "unlawfully" , fuedalism had many rulers and lower labor forces (Serfs) but the serfs were taken care of more. In china they had intricate systems of control and almost equality, I currently do not know Indias Government or social society at this time i shall look this up.. anyway goodnight AP history zzzzz lol
Haha this is Sabrina and Molly
The Encomienda, a form of feudalism, was brought to the New World by the Spanish colonists. It was an economic, military, and religious system under the rule of Isabella. Others portrayed it as form of virtual slavery.
Under the Encomienda the Native Americans were made to work for the Spaniards, and in return the Spaniards were supposed to treat them well and provide for their needs. Instead of taking care of them, the Spaniards took advantage of the Native Americas for their own needs; they also put them on plantations. Many Native Americans lives were lost due to starvation, disease, and intense labor.

The encomienda system is deeply entrenched in the history and culture of South and Central America, and is one of the most damaging institutions that the Spanish colonists implemented in the New World. The system came to signify the oppression and exploitation of Native Americans, although its originators did not set out with such intent.
When the Spanish explorers claimed the lands in the New World, they set up institutions with which they were familiar at home in Castile, and at that time, there were strong links to their feudalistic history. Therefore, the Spanish modified their model of feudalism to fit both the needs and conditions in New Spain and the Caribbean. This form of feudalism, the encomienda system, was created in May 1493, by the Crown in Castile who reserved the right to grant and remove the encomiendas as seen fit. However, encomiendas were only taken away from Spanish in extreme cases. The encomienda itself was a grant of Indians within a geographic region, which were given to an encomendero, the Spaniard who received the grant of Indians.
The encomienda system was based on fudelism in Europe but in India it went by the cast system. The loest cast system members being the sudra being the equivilant to pesants were "protected" by the khstria or the worriors. but in term there was no protection the sudra farmed while the khstria wnt and took over more land and gaining riches. This lead to making the khstria whelthy and the sudra in an even worse economic state.
The Encomienda system is a system of tributary labor established in Spanish America. It was developed as a means of securing an adequate and cheap labor supply. The Encomienda was first used in the Moors of Spain and later was taken to the New World. It gave conquistadors the control over the native peoples residing there by forcing them to pay tribute from their lands, which where "granted" to loyal subjects of the Spanish crown. In return the conquistadors where supposed to protect the natives, teach them of the Christian faith, and defend their right to use the land for their own survival. However, this did not happen and the conquistadors greatly exploited the native populations.
The Encomienda System was established in response to the colonists' need for Indian labour, but became the most destructive system in the history of Spanish America.
When the Spanish arrived in the New World, they brought with them a set of customs and traditions from their old Spain. One of the systems that were commonly practiced in Western Europe was forced labour. In Spain, this was knownas the Encomienda system. An encomienda was a means of providing a Spaniard a portion of land and restricted property rights over a certain number of Indians. The Encomienda system quickly became entrenched in South and Central America. Although it was implemented with the intention to care for and provide for the Native Americans, it became the most abusive and destructive system in colonial New Spain.
As legally defined in 1503, an encomienda (from encomendar, “to entrust”) consisted of a grant by the crown to a conquistador, soldier, official, or others of a specified number of Indians living in a particular area. The receiver of the grant, the encomendero, could exact tribute from the Indians in gold, in kind, or in labour and was required to protect them and instruct them in the Christian faith. The encomienda did not include a grant of land, but in practice the encomenderos gained control of the Indians’ lands and failed to fulfil their obligations to the Indian population. The crown’s attempts to end the severe abuses of the system with the Laws of Burgos (1512–13) and the New Law of the Indies (1542) failed in the face of colonial opposition and, in fact, a revised form of the repartimiento system was revived after 1550.
The encomienda was designed to meet the needs of the colonies’ early mining economy. With the catastrophic decline in the Indian population and the replacement of mining activities by agriculture, the system lost its effectiveness and was gradually replaced by the hacienda system of landed estates. The encomienda was not officially abolished, however, until the late 18th century. See also repartimiento.
thanks thats all for now

The encomienda system was my favorite topic of WH. It was easy to remember and relatively simple. Definitely a subject you could throw in your essay to score a few Brownie points with the AP reader peoples.

The encomienda system is the grant of authority over the Amerindians people in the Spanish colonies. The Amerindian people were forced to provide the European settlers in the Americas with labor or textiles, food and other goods.

Wow I havent been here in a while and wow yeah well here my though about Encomienda. Ecomienda is a system that is preety much like the Welfare system people have to work for food and also in return studys and exceptance to the learining of catholism. This took place during the spaniard colonization but one would of guessed that by know because well whos going to teach the Amerindians the religion the aliens. This also benifited in the way that indians also wernt forced out of their lands. But also it was a preety good deal exept that they had to pay taxes also they were judicially govern so people in the ecomienda were preety much self govered most of the time. For a while it did work ok but over time like the system they had in china it worked too good. and sunner or later someone not going to have to agree with something but yeah not an expert at this ubut this is what i can come up with that I learned about during this term.
The encomienda system was a labor system for the spanish colonies in the Americas and the Philippines. A person was granted a sir tent amount of natives to watch over and teach the spanish language and the catholic faith in return the owner could use the natives as slaves. The social systems in India, China, Africa and Europe was based on race and what you did for a living.
Can't wait to see what I learn in your class.
