On March 1st we will have trials for five famous figures from History and Literature.
Each trial will take about 20 minutes and participation in the trial will be worth 50 points. The trial will be on Thursday the first of March. The classes will be combined. Your role in the trial will be determined on a first come/ first served basis. Sign up below stating the figure and the role you desire.
The Roles:
Each trial will have:
- 4 defense attorneys and 4 prosecution attorneys who will:
Prepare the case (defense or prosecution)
Present witnesses (act them out)
Question witnesses
- The Defendant
- A Reporter who will interview and write a short summary of the trial to be published on this blog.
The Figures
- Napoleon (the pig)- charged with murder, corruption and violation the laws of Animal Farm
- Queen Victoria- charged with conspiracy in the commission of drug smuggling, extortion and murder
- Karl Marx- charged with corrupting the youth, inciting revolution and treason
- Napoleon I (the man)- charged with conducting an unjust war, escaping from prison and incompetence
- Okonkwo- charged with distubing the peace, violation of parole, assault on a British officer
- Up to 25 points Extra Credit for dressing appropriately (in costume and wearing costume all day.)

The trial of Queen Victoria was an impressive standout during these thumb trials. Queen Victoria was played by Katherine Derrington and her defense team was Miriam Camarena, Sabrina Galindo, Sydney Wilson and Kyle Romanolo. Her prosecution was Kerry Webster, Gracie Stephens, Skyler Lutjen and Cristina Tinoco.
When asked how her trial would end, she answered, "It could go either way, but I hope I'm proven innocent."
From the beginning the prosecution and her defense were very feisty. The opening statement of her prosecution accused her of murder, extortion and drug smuggling. The opening statement of her defense team claimed she did not harm people and asked if any sort of treaty was fair.
From then on the prosecution and defense seemed to battle each other endlessly. The prosecution argued the Treaty of Nanking was unfair and it caused faulty peace within China because the Opium War was ongoing. Her defense explained that she gave money for the benefit of other countries and Britain. Also, they claimed she had a right to luxury and she didn't do things for her self gain.
The prosecution's closing statement claimed she treated people unfairly and neglected them. Her defense claimed she rightfully took care of her country and distributed money equally. In the end her verdict was non-guilty of all charges.
"I feel amazing!" Queen Victoria said after her trial. Very extraordinary, indeed.
Napoleon approached the front of the court with an uncomfortable stagger, and collapsed onto his seat. A question was mumbled to him, and he mumbled a brief response, but the court was loud and both mumbles almost entirely unintelligible.
Once the court finally reached a low roar, and the speakers could be clearly understood, prosecution began to argue against Napoleon. They concisely stated that Napoleon had changed all of the laws of Animal Farm, adjusting him in a way hat only he could benefit from. After this statement, the entire court took a thick moment of silence. The suspense was nearly visible as it filled the air.
The silence was finally broken by one of Napoleon's lawyers.“There is no evidence that he brainwashed the dogs,” the lawyer said timidly, without any attempt to address the prosecution's previous statement. Upon hearing this, prosecution fired back, and insisted that there was plenty of evidence, but failed to provide any until later on.
Napoleon's defense then went on to explain that his action towards the dogs were actually charitable and kind actions, because if he had not taken them under his wing they would not have a home.
Prosecution then insisted that dogs are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves. The subject was abruptly changed, though neither side had yet shown that they were stronger than the other.
Prosecution asked Napoleon why he built the windmill on the farm, and Napoleon spoke for the first time since his unintelligible mumbles, and said that the farm would benefit from the electricity it provided. Prosecution responded by insisting that the blueprints for the windmill were stolen from Snow Ball. They asked Napoleon why Snow Ball's ideas were frowned upon by Napoleon while he was on the farm, but used after he had been run off. Napoleon insisted that this was untrue. He had not stolen the blueprints from Snow Ball, but Snowball had, in fact, stolen them from him.
The topic then shifted to Napoleon's murder accusations. Defense explained that Napoleon had never directly killed an animal with his own “hands.” They told the court that Napoleon always desired “the better” for the farm. Prosecution argued that if Napoleon did in fact care about the prosecutions that took place on the farm he would have put an end to it.
Defense quickly fired back that the animals were only killed because they were attempting to demolish the farm. The attorneys explained that all the animals of the farm agreed that the time spent under Napoleon's rule was better than it had been under the rule of Mr. Jones.
“There is no reason Napoleon isn't guilty.” Said prosecution in their closing statement. Defense responded with “Napoleon is a leader and has the right to change the laws.”
In the end, Napoleon was proven innocent of all charges by a majority vote.

The trial of Louis XVI was a short and I wouldn't say one sided thumb trial but neither side was very strong or opposing to the other in this case. Louis XVI was played by Kevin Montemayor and his defense was Maria Lopez, Alex Jimenez,and Shaela Rogers. His prosecution was Danielle Schneider, Angel Cardona, Claudia Torres and Claudia Valadez.
Louis was prosecuted or accused of destroying the French army, letting America borrow a large sum of money that they never paid off, putting France in a financial crisis and leaving his country behind. The defense at first argued that Louis's wife was the cause of spending so much money on herself putting the country in a economic down fall. They also argued that he marched his army to stop the rebellion and for the benefit of the whole nation. While the prosecution argues that he is guilty because they were letters from him and his brothers to prove their case and instead of helping the army and country it just killed them all. But through out the whole case the defense kept putting it out on his wife. In the end Louis was charged with putting the nation in debt and corruption. Even though he was guilty, both sides neither had a good arguement for their accusations or good evidence he did all these things, so the thumb trial for Louis XVI was not that strong

In the trial of Napolean the man, he was accused of planning unjust war, escaping prison and treason. His defendants brought up the good things that he improved technologies but that did not stop the prosecutors of saying that out of 700 soldiers ten percent were fed and well equipped for battle. During the prosecution he was asked if sexist and he said that he was not because women depended a lot on men. As he said to his prosecutors "Europe loved us," and they never knew Russia wanted change. His defendors ended up saying that, "Napolean is innocnt and he is good," while his prosecutors accused him of being guilty because of unjust war and not caring about his soldiers. This case resolved their problem by proving Napolean 1 guilty!
