Well Fans, we are on to the World Wars now and the tumultous 20th century. I think it would be intersting to "research" these topics with some person to person surveying. If you can find someone (grandparent, teacher, etc.) who was alive and can remember the events of those years, have an informal chat with them.
Also, the themes of the course would be interesting to relate to the impact of the wars.
5 Themes of AP World History
1. Impact of interaction among and within major societies.
2. Impact of technology, economics, and demography on the people and the environment.
3. Systems of social structure and gender structure.
4. Cultural, religious and intellectual developments.
5. Changes in functions and structures of states and in attitudes toward states and political identities, including the emergence of the nation-state.
So get this: 10 points for recapping an interview on this blog and up to 5 points each for discussing each of the 5 themes. Put some thought into it! We can do this all the up to Spring Break. Some of you need the points!

all I could get out of my great-grandma was stories about putting cardboard in the bottoms of her shoes 'cause they used all their stamps to buy other stuff....

1. England, the US, and the Soviet Union were the three main allies and fought together against Germany and Japan even though their ideas were conflicting on how to deal with the whole situation. After WWII ended the Soviet Union took advantage of this alliance to further Stalin's empire. Stalin tricked the US and England into thinking the Soviet Union was working for the betterment of the world when the Allies had defeated Nazi forces in Europe. In reality, Stalin was using his army to expand throughout areas he was supposed to be helping adjust to the new freedom after ridding these countries of Hitler's rule. The US and England had to work together against Stalin, but the Soviet union did not fall apart until 1991. Even though Stalin died much earlier in 1953, communism continued under the leadership of Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, Konstantin Chernenko, Mikhail Gorbachev. Under Gorbachev communism fell after a long Cold War with the US.

Anyways, since this is such a lonely and well...naked, i'm going write some stuff. K?
1) To begin with, i'd like to start off with one of my favorite wars. The Opium War. Although both wars were lost to by the Chinese; they were still very important as the impact it had on China's intereaction with other societies. China did not willingly open up its borders for trade with other Societies but instead was forced to by British Empire.
This war was also important to the follow up wars of the Boxer Rebellion and the Taiping rebellion. Which i'd say changed interaction within China aswell :]
2) Haitian Revolution is next! You see, for this war, both sides were effected demographically and one was severely effected economically.
Haiti's demography changed once it freed itself from the French Empire. What use to be a land full of Haitians and French, turned to simply a Haitian population(with maybe other minorities from other islands). France had two problems, first its economy was struct down since Haiti was one of its more important peripheries. Basically its economy was hit very hard. This then caused people from France to move on out to America, to find new oppertunities. Which changed America's demography ;o
just slightly...still counts though right?
3) For this catergory. I want to introduce one of my favorite sounding wars. The Crimean War. A little introduction is in order. So basically this war involved an allied system of france, britian and the ottoman; against the mighty Russian empire.
What was at stake here, was the land of the Ottoman; both side wanted this land and the Ottoman's were at the verge of collapse. So begins the fighting. What this war impacted of the systems of gender/social structure were the way women played a role in this war.
Women now joined the frontlines as medics(nurses) as to aid with the injured on the battle field. People like Florence Nightingale were instrumental in giving women more importance. She is renowned in setting up basic nursing even today. Not sure if its worth noting, but a intellectual development occured in that France learned to use railroad systems effectively to transport important materials during this war.
4) For(get it?) cultural development because of a war. I'm going to go with the American Revolution! Because of what happened after the war was finished, Americans established their very own persona; they wanted to be nothing like England had been. They strived for their own identity, which basically called for change of their old culture. I doubt there was much religious change though =]
5) Ehhh i'm too tired at this Parker to define a specific war from Latin America. But i know it was a civil war which finally made the inhabits of Latin America say
"Hey! We're fine on our own, we don't need you guys anymore!"
Which lead to their emergance of many nation-states! D:

Anyways, i'm confident in 4/5 of these. And well, none of my family members who are alive now were alive for WWII or WWI
A few are, but they lived in Mexico at the time, so i doubt they are much help...lol

by the way, in the beginning i looked up "women during wartimes" for #3. Cause i couldn't remember the war with FLorence(only after i saw the word word crimes did i remember) but anyways, the results were full of "American" women during WWI and WWII
Annoyed me =l why is 20 result pages full of only two american wars...? >:l
