Hey mr. parker
it's becca
yali's question was "Why is that you white people developed much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but
we black people had little cargo of our own?"
it has to do with why Eurasians and not anyone else pretty much dominates the world.

-that was Yali's question.
the question could be interpreted as asking why it is that the dominating countries are run by white people, or what sets black people apart from white people (not biologically)?

I think that the reason europe and the U.S and places predominately run by white people tend to amass more land and respect because, for one, most of the technological advances have been made by white people, which gives them an upper hand, and more of the world is inhabited by white people than by black people, and since it is common to overlook minorities, not much attention was paid to the countries that were inhabited mostly by black people. Aside from that, black people were once used as slaves by white people, and that tends to add a negative connotation to their reputation in countries that are influenced by the U.S., so those countries tend to disassociate themselves from predominately 'black' countries. not only that, but white people are crawling with diseases xD

Europeans are known to have entered lands and carried with them diseases that have killed off whoever was living there before, which could explain why white people tend to dominate more of the world than black people.

sorry for the tl;dr post
:D

oh...and if you don't know what tl;dr means, I'm sorry for that too xD

Europeans have a pretty good domination of the world because they had 1) the determination 2) the technology 3) and the diseases.

Europeans have gained the superiority over other ethnic.....peoples because of the way they entered teh countries. Basically by showing up little by little and taking little bits of land until most of the land is owned by the Europeans.

Also, the belief that people with lighter sin are superior has been around for a while. In India and other countries, it is always the people with the fairest skin who are at the top of the social scale, while the darker people are at the bottom and are normally slaves.
In America, African Americans were used as slaves for quite some time. it is just the way the human mind works.

Also, Europeans had much much higher levels of technology. This intimidated other cultures and the shrunk away from the Europeans, you could say. Europeans had guns. And various other weapons that scared others away.

Lastly, Europeans had many different diseases with them that these cultures had never encountered before. Therefore many deaths occured. VERY many deaths because they had no way to treat them.

There you go Mr. Parker

I NEED THESE POINTS OFR AN A!!!!!!!

To tackle Yali's question...
I think the major question is...why is there such thing as social or economic differences in races or parts of the world?for example...India, Africa, china, the united states, Europe...

I don't think think this question just focuses on the black and white races, I believe it has a more general approach.

but as far talking about the reasons why Europeans were able to "dominate" over other races/countries was yeah technology, determination, but also two other key things to mention here is that Europe had religion. They that sense of Christianity which although some christian faiths like protestantism, Calvinism and Catholicism had their differences, I think that judging from the different monarch countries like Spain and France, added, or gave more overall power to Europe.

Another thing that connects to religion was this idea of absolutism. Europe had a monarchy, which most of the time gave Europeans nobility and government more powerful. Having one King or Queen to posses the absolute power of a nation I think created a more central government that other nations lacked.

thats it for now parker and ap students!

hopefully my reasons were understood.

Ok this is the first time i've left a comment on this thing ... so hopefully i don't embarrass myself :]

Ok, I think a huge reason why "whites" seem to be so dominant has to do with an ancient inability for most people to admit that they are NOT the best and ARE capable of flaws. For the longest time (and still to this very day) power, mostly military, mean superiority. Unfortuneatley, there is a much weaker link between power and intelligence (otherwise we wouldn't of had Bush. Sorry if I'm offending Repulicans. No offence intended). If someone has weapons and knows how to use them, others who don't, better watch out. Unfortuneately, after the Renaissance, Europeans took that "superiority" away from China. After that, any societies who were foreign to the European ways, were obviously no competition for power. Sadly, this proved right in places like Africa and the Americas, who were still dependant on a more tribal basis, and were left confused (if not dead) when confronted with the Europeans' god-like oppinions of themselves.

Furthermore, I think power based on skin color also has to do with the amount of physical labor someone does. Like many culture thought, China being the most recognizable, the more outside work you do, the darker you get. Those with political power, and therefor social power, who stayed inside living "the good life" all day obviously were very pale.

Hopefully that answered the question. Sorry if there are any spelling errors. There's no spell-check on this thing.

I was thinking more about this whole European "domination" thing...and I came to think that the reason why they were so powerful over other race of people was probably because they themselves were striving for that power, they were striving to become nations.

In order to do this they were willing to do whatever they could.
They were looking for more advancement in technology, education, and economy, they wanted to build powerful countries.

Other civilizations like Africa for example were not that interested in urbanizing their states to that extent as the Europeans...

I think this would make sense...the reason why European nations gained more control over others...

so yeah.

Yali's question, "Why is that you white people developed much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but
we black people had little cargo of our own?", goes to the heart of the condition of the modern world; how have such inequalities of wealth evolved? Why do some have so much, and others so little? How have a group of societies, in the area of northern Europe, east Asia, and North America, come to politically and economically dominate the societies of the rest of the world?

In my opinion, the white people dominated mostly because of their selfishness and greed. And the fact that they spread diseases that killed almost everyone off gave them an upperhand too.

for some reason, throughout history, people have the need to be in control, mostly because of pride or honor. But instead of ruling fairly, they use fear. They threaten, beat and even kill. It's absolutely amazing what people do to just wear a crown on their head.

White people dominated more because of their curiousity, which led to their traveling. They actually wanted to find out what was in the world they lived in, and what they could get from it.

However, using Equiano's point of view from last night's reading, most people, like the Africans, didn't even have the slightest idea that there were different places in the world that had oher inhabitants let alone be curious about it. To them, they were satisfied with what they had and only worried about themselves. But the white people wanted more.

And answer to Yali's question might be because of all the trading the Euorpeans did all around the world that made them have all those riches and luxuries. The African's didn't sail the oceans, so they didn't and couldn't have the trading exchanges that the Europeans had.

When did we go over this in class?
Yesterday? Hahahaha oh well...
Good thing i read about this question when i watched Guns, Germs and Steel!

Lets begin!
"Why is that you white people developed much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own"

Wow, i loved this from that movie! Gah!
Ok 1) First thing i heard when he said this, was a simple childish question. Why do you have so much stuff and why'd you bring it over to us, who have so little. Maybe he just saw it as a type of difference between colors. Honestly, when was there another time these isolated villagers had seen white people. Could it be that my first assumptions, they notice that Whites are bound with so much cargo. Or, its maybe even asking why do you white people get so much cargo, when we black people have so little to begin with?

2)A geograpical question. Where is it you lived in order to gain all this stuff. From first looks, New Guinea is small, puny and not many types of agricultural benefits from that land. Hardly anything, and then there are the restrictions the villagers lived by because they could not support more then that. Is that how black people were restricted? Because of our unability to make skilled workers. Everyone in their land had to commit to gathering food for the limit of 2,311 people in the village Yali lived in.
Maybe yali was thinking on how many people it required to build the stuff and for them to bring such large cargo to theeir land.

3) An intellectual standby, maybe Yali was curious if it was white people themselves were actually born smarter? Would this answer more questions, then questions would arise. Whites were just simply smarter? black people had little cargo because they lacked the intelligence to go any farther? Did black people have something missing where they could not continue onwards.
Foor me, it would look much more like the white people were trying to scare us. Showing us everything they had in order to make us believe they are the higher beings.

Umm so yea, hope that was enough lol
That was fun =] I like doing this a lot hehe

yali's question was "Why is that you white people developed much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?" I think there are several reasons why Europeans dominated the rest of the world.
First of all, Europeans were in competition with both other countries and other religions for domination. This leads to new explorations for new things such as trade routes for wealth to make themselves dominant over others.
Also, technology borrowed from other countries like CChina were put to good use in new explorations.
Europe also had a great location in a geographical view. Many European countries were in a very advantageous location for trade, making them very wealthy.
Why did other countries not dominate over the world sooner? China, for example, had access to much better technology before the rest of the world caught up. I think that here, religion and philosoly plays a big role. Chinese were not really concerned with domination. They believed in living in harmony with the earth, not trying to discover it.

i'm pretty sure you did this when some of us were doin our job shadow...anyways,\
analyzing the question, i came up with thoughts concerning this having to do with mercantilism..because isnt it that in 90% of white people during that time period are under the policy of absolutism. and so with absolutism comes mercantilism which shows why exported goods cost more than imported ones..that is why the english cargo had more than the black people's.

its the first thing that came to mind..so..that's pretty much it..

I actually watched the Guns, Germs, and Steel movie over the summer,so i think i have a fairly good grasp on the reason why the white people had so much "cargo".
i highly doubt that the advantages european people had came from any sort of racial superiority, but rather from where they were situated at the time. the mild climate in the area the europeans populated allowed for a steady food source, which led to a sedentary society that eventually produced surplus food. since they didn't need to worry about food anymore, the europeans had extra time on their hands. they used that time to pursue other things, which eventually led to intellectual advancements. that explains why the white people had so much "cargo".

in areas with harsher environments like new guinea, it was harder to grow food. therfore, the people who lived in that area had to struggle to find food. the lack of food delayed the development of civilization, and whatever time they had was devoted towards finding food. thus, they had no time for any intellectual advancement, at least not as much as the europeans. this explains new guinea's lack of "cargo".

as a side note, i would like to add that asian people experienced similar advantages and developed great civilizations as well. it wasn't just the europeans that had so much cargo. just saying.

Ok, so basically the question was "Why is that you white people developed much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but
we black people had little cargo of our own?". I think what Yali was trying to ask was "why and how do you have so many goods, and how can we obtain that kind of wealth without you bringing it overseas?" The easiest answer would, of course, be for the people of New Guinea to relocate as the cash crops and luxury goods obtained in Europe could not be easily produced in New Guinea. However, it would also be extremely difficult to get that many people into another country and have that country still strive.
However, there was also a good side to being rather isolated. there were less people, therefore less chance of spreading disease. Unlike Europe, where diseases, like the black plague, spread very quickly.
I think thats all for now.
