Which invention/ concept changed history more?

Hello all and thank you for visiting.

We know enough now to compare and speculate, so here's a question to ponder:

Which was a more important significant contribution,; the chief contribution to civilization by the Lydians or that of the Phoenicians? Think of which would be more difficult to live without.

I'll give 10 (ten)extra credit points for the first to identify both of those contributions, and 5(five) points for any intelligent responses. (You can respond more than once.) We'll go until September 24th on this. Have fun.

well, the Lydians used coined money, and the Phoenicians made an alphabet. Both of those things would be incredibly hard to live without, but I think that people may survive without an alphabet, seeing as how native Americans didn't have a written alphabet and neither did many other older civilizations that used pictures instead. I think that coined money could also be lived without, because trading and things like that would prevail, but it would be a very confusing world without it because the government taxes would have to be paid in things like gold or plants. Honestly, I think both concepts changed history, and it's way too hard to decide which changed history the most.

Ok, so basically, Coin Vs. Alphabet. As Cortney stated, it is possible to live without either of these. However, I must debate the fact that it is too hard to choose which is more important. In my opinion, the Alphabet is. Coin is important, but there are other ways and forms to exchange goods. Trading, bartering and in some cases people have used shells and beads in order to pay for merchandise. The alphabet would be hard to communicate without. It would, in fact, be impossible for me to get extra credit through means of this blog. We wouldn't be able to express our thought into words, letters, poems, songs, essays. Without an alphabet our dollar would just be a piece of green paper, it might have a face on it, but how would we know who that face belonged to, there would be no way, save story-telling, to learn about history and our fore-fathers. And in turn, Mr. Parker might just be out of a job. And I'm pretty sure that's a bad thing.

Ok, I think thats all for now.

Great comments-
Courtney gets the 10 points for being first. Alyssa brings up a good point about Mr. Parker's job which is quite valid.

I think it might be somehow better to live in a world without money. Simpler and more creative. I cannot, however, think of a world without an alphabet. What would we do for grades?!

Mr. Parker, I think you may be feeling Cortney's wrath sometime soon. You spelled her name wrong(no "u"). Yes I'm going off into the spelling thing again.

yeah, I'm done now

Like both Cortney and Alyssa have said, the Lydians invented coins, and the Phoenicians the alphabet.
We could have lived without coins, but the alphabet is a must have. I mean without it, would we even get anywhere in history? How would computer programs work without letters? o.o Would I even be here typing this out? But then again I wouldn't have to be working so hard on turning that B to an A because they wouldn't exist. Haha. And pictures would be hard because some people on this earth are just not the world's greatest artists. lol. What if the picture gets misinterprated? It might start a war instead of an innocent act of trying to borrow a cup of sugar.
Coins are just an object that have a value, we could have done that with rocks if the Lydians chose to.

hey mr. parker.
i KNOW (not think) that this world needed the existence of the Phoenicians more than the lydians. because.. if you had money(coins for instance), how could you be able to transverse/converse to other people.. and you may have the idea of currency but you wouldnt have any clue how to use it without the use of talking.. the world was fine with just trading stuff.. and so , the the alphabet is essential to all kinds of living. it does not only serves as a use for venacular but it did also help unite the world as one.. countries have been able to communicate with the use of alphabets..and so, the phoenicians were vital to our world...

but again.. this world wouldn't have been this way if the lydians didn't exist..
EVERYTHING HAPPENED/HAPPENS FOR A REASON.

I'd have to say the alphabet is more important. Not because currency isn't important but someone else was bound to come up with it a little later. Whats a bigger impact? Money or Language/Writing?
Obviously, if we were to lose a couple of hundred of years for the alphabet to start, things would have changed drastically due course in history. Now in my opinion, not so much on currency. Although i'm not really a fan on money, it just makes us crazy :l

Money = Power = Corruption
What a world we live in xo

lol Jasper you're so funny XPP but i do agree with you, money can sometimes bring the worst out of people!! its quite unfortunate =(

and like most have been saying, I do think that the alphabet is more important and like Jasper said, it would have been created at some point in time. However, whether or not they would have been characters rather than actual letters if it were created later on is a mysterey!!

People keep saying "it would be invented later on anyway", but would it really, whether "it" be the Alphabet or Coined money. We have no way to prove that it would have. In this case I think we would be trying to create a scenario in which the other does not exist and therefore I still believe the alphabet is more important. The alphabet is a major form of communication, and even in the modern world, I don't think coined money makes that great of an impact if taken away. We would have other forms of trading. You do not need money in order to be a well developed society. However, it would be difficult to have a functioning society without writing.
